Key points

You need to create a cue card. This will be given by your examiner for IELTS Speaking Task 2 (Part 2). In that cue card, you can see your topic—”Describe a book that you have read many times”—plus some sub questions to talk about the cue card for one or two minutes. You get one minute to prepare your cue card, and then you must keep talking. The examiner will tell you when it is time to stop; they will not interrupt before all the given questions are covered. In IELTS speaking part 3, there will be a follow-up section. This is like a conversation around the topic you were given in your cue card prompt.

You should say-

  • When you read it?
  • What kind of book is it?
  • What is it about?
  • And explain why you think it is exciting?

The Catcher in the Rye: Describe An Important Book That You Have Read Many Times

Introduction

I have many books that I like, but “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger is a book I keep reading again and again. This story was first introduced to me when I was in high school, and from then on it has been revisited multiple times.

When you read it

When I was in high school, my English teacher suggested to me “The Catcher in the Rye” and shortly after that I read it. Because of its famousness and controversial status, I decided to get a copy from our school’s library. From the time when I read it for the first time until now, almost every year I revisit this book because there are many layers and meanings within it.

What kind of book it is and What it is about

“The Catcher in the Rye” is a novel that begins with the main character, Holden Caulfield’s story, after he gets kicked out of his prep school. The time setting for this book is in 1950s New York and it takes place over just a few days. This book talks about what many teenagers feel – frustration and isolation – showing how difficult growing up can be as you try to find your place in life while also dealing with fake adults around you.

And explain why you think it is exciting

For me, the most exciting part of “The Catcher in the Rye” is Salinger’s special way of speaking by using Holden. The story feels unfiltered and true, filled with a combination of cynicism and innocent dreaming that characterises growing up. The subjects about who we are, where we fit in and what we lose mean something to readers at any stage of life – this makes it an interesting book to read.

Conclusion

I have read “The Catcher in the Rye” many times, and for me it is an evergreen classic. This book has left a deep mark on literature, as well as those who read it. People from different generations can connect with Holden’s story because they see parts of themselves in him. I believe that everyone should try to experience this important book at least once.

Follow up Questions: Describe An Important Book That You Have Read Many Times

Follow-up questions for the topic “Describe a book that you have read many times” are given below. In the real exam, this session goes on for around 4-5 minutes. You need to talk about questions related to a general subject or question on your cue card.

1- Do you prefer books or movies?

I’m an avid movie fan, I must admit. Books are not my favourite thing. Unlike books, where you need to imagine the characters and specific scenes which makes reading more repetitive, movies have a visual impact and show you the actual characters.

2- Is it necessary to read the book first before you see the film?

From how I see it, at times the movies achieve more than the books. For example, the Half-Girlfriend movie was excellent but the book seemed quite boring and if you read it before watching the movie there is no climax or conclusion in the story from the book’s side which makes understanding difficult for readers who watched this film as one of their blockbuster movies when released (Last Name).

3- Do boys and girls like the same kind of books?

Boys heavily lean towards action, comic, and comedy books whereas girls mostly like romantic novels with sometimes a mix of rom-coms.

4- What kind of books do Indian people like to read?

It’s subjective for each person. In my viewpoint, every age group has its own reading preferences. For example, children may like comic books or stories of fairies; adults could prefer reading about present happenings while seniors might enjoy religious texts more than other kinds.
