The building I’d like to describe is the Empire State Building, an iconic skyscraper in New York City.

When did you visit it?

I visited the Empire State Building last summer during a trip to New York City with my family.

What does it look like?

The Empire State Building is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture. It’s a 102-story skyscraper with a distinctive stepped facade that tapers towards the top. The exterior is clad in limestone and granite, giving it a classic, timeless appearance. At night, the top of the building is illuminated with colorful lights that change for different occasions.

Why is it considered historical?

The Empire State Building is considered historical for several reasons. Completed in 1931, it was the world’s tallest building for nearly 40 years. It represents the ambition and engineering prowess of the early 20th century, having been built during the Great Depression. The building has been featured in numerous films and has become a symbol of New York City itself.

How did you feel when you saw it?

When I first saw the Empire State Building, I was awestruck by its sheer size of it! I have never seen anything like it, especially in India. Standing at its base and looking up, I felt a sense of wonder at how capable humans are. Visiting the observation deck on the 86th floor was exhilarating – the panoramic views of New York City spread out below made me feel on top of the world. It was a truly memorable experience that gave me a new appreciation for architectural marvels.

What is the building?

The building I’d like to describe is the Taj Mahal, a magnificent mausoleum in India which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. 

Where is it located?

The Taj Mahal is located in the city of Agra, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on the right bank of the Yamuna River.

When did you visit it?

I had the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal two years ago during a cultural tour of India.

What does it look like?

The Taj Mahal is a breathtaking white marble mausoleum. Its most striking feature is the large central dome, flanked by four smaller domes. The building is perfectly symmetrical, with minarets at each corner of the platform.

Why is it considered historical?

The Taj Mahal is considered historical for its architectural perfection and the story behind its creation. Built in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, it represents the zenith of Mughal architecture. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site and is often described as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

How did you feel when you saw it? 

The ethereal beauty of the white marble against the blue sky took my breath away. As I walked through the gardens and entered the mausoleum, I felt a deep sense of peace and awe. The intricate craftsmanship and the love story behind its construction moved me emotionally.

What is the building?

The building I’d like to describe is the Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds.

Where is it located?

It’s located in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. Rajasthan is known for being one of the most culturally-rich cities in the world, and many tourists have Hawa Mahal on their lists. 

When did you visit it?

I visited the Hawa Mahal last year during a trip to explore Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage.

What does it look like?

The Hawa Mahal is a unique five-story building made of red and pink sandstone. Its most striking feature is the honeycomb-like structure of its facade, with 953 small windows decorated with intricate latticework. The building is relatively flat, resembling a screen or a honeycomb.

Why is it considered historical?

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the Hawa Mahal is considered historical due to its distinctive architecture and cultural significance. It was designed to allow royal women to observe street festivals while remaining unseen from the outside, adhering to the strict rules of “purdah”. The building is a fine example of Rajput architecture and showcases the lifestyle of the royal family in the 18th century.

The role of historical buildings in society has evolved significantly over time. Originally, these buildings served purely functional purposes – castles for defense, cathedrals for worship, palaces for governance, and so on. 

Q: In your opinion, what makes a building ‘historical’? 

Several other factors contribute to a building’s historical status: Firstly, cultural or historical significance plays a crucial role. A building that was the site of important events, housed significant figures, or represents a pivotal moment in a nation’s history can be considered historical regardless of its age.
