Sanjay Gandhi National Park: Describe a Place in Your City Where You Can See Wildlife

Where is it?

The place I’d like to describe is Sanjay Gandhi National Park, located in the northern part of Mumbai. It’s one of the largest urban parks in the world, spanning about 104 square kilometers.

What kind of wildlife is present there?

You can spot various animals like leopards, deer, monkeys, and wild boars at this popular urban park. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 250 species of birds, including kingfishers, hornbills, and paradise flycatchers. There are also numerous butterflies, insects, and reptiles.

How often do you visit this place?

I try to visit the park at least once every two months. It’s a bit far from my home, so I usually plan a full-day trip on weekends.

Why do you like going there?

I enjoy visiting this park because it offers a rare opportunity to experience wilderness and nature in its truest sense. The contrast between the urban jungle of Mumbai and the actual jungle in the park is striking and makes for a deep discussion.

Follow-up Questions and Answers: Describe a Place in Your City Where You Can See Wildlife

  1. How important do you think it is to have wildlife areas in cities?

According to me, it is quite important. Urban wildlife areas provide essential habitats, maintain biodiversity, and offer city dwellers a connection with nature. This allows people to maintain a harmonious relationship with nature.

  1. What are some challenges that urban wildlife faces?

Urban wildlife faces habitat loss, pollution, human-wildlife conflict, road accidents, and adaptation to artificial environments like zoos.

  1. How has urbanization affected wildlife in your country?

Urbanization in India has led to significant habitat loss and fragmentation. However, some species like monkeys and birds have adapted to urban environments.

  1. What measures has your city taken to protect urban wildlife?

Many Indian cities have established urban forests, biodiversity parks, and protected areas. There are also initiatives for urban lake restoration, butterfly gardens, and strict regulations against harming wildlife.

  1. Do you think zoos are a good alternative for seeing wildlife in cities? Why or why not?

Zoos can be educational, but they’re not ideal alternatives to natural habitats. Modern Indian zoos focus on conservation and education, but seeing animals in their natural environment is an enriching experience.

  1. How can the urban population contribute to wildlife conservation?

People from metropolitan cities can create wildlife-friendly spaces in their gardens, participate in citizen science projects, support local conservation organizations, and practice responsible waste management to prevent harm to urban wildlife like cows, dogs, and monkeys.
