The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is a public college in New York City which is connected with the State University of New York (SUNY) and focuses on art, business, design, mass communication, and technology as they are related to the fashion industry.

  • The Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center has spaces for design studies, including painting studios, sculpture studios, printing rooms, graphics labs, display and exhibit design rooms, life-sketching rooms, and a workshop for building models. 
  • With resources for history, sociology, technology, art, and literature, as well as international journals and periodicals, sketchbooks and records donated by designers, manufacturers, and retailers, slides, tapes, periodicals, and a clipping file, the Shirley Goodman Resource Center also houses the Museum at FIT. 

Fashion designers Norma Kamali, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors(who did not complete his studies there), interior designer Scott Salvator, and filmmaker Joel Schumacher are some of the school’s well-known graduates.

Eligibility & Required Documents 

The following requirements must be met by international applicants for admission to any program at the Fashion Institute of Technology: 

Undergraduate Admissions

Undergraduate students must have their official secondary or post-secondary school credentials examined by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Where the secondary school does not foresee a transfer of credit, a document-wise examination that includes the following is required:

  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
  • Equivalency of the qualifications in the US

If the transfer of credentials is possible, FIT requests a course-by-course examination. The course title, US credit equivalent, and US grade equivalent must all be included in the evaluation. It also has to contain the following:

  • US equivalency of each qualification of school
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for each qualification of the school
  • A copy of the relevant documents translated into English

Postgraduate Admissions

The minimum requirement for students is a bachelor’s degree with 30 transferable credits from an accredited university, college, or other institution. Applications for the liberal arts, the arts, and design must have these 30 credits. Students are not required to submit their GRE scores, however doing so is advised. In addition, the results of any of the following English proficiency tests will be accepted:

FIT recognizes academic transcripts that have been legally authenticated by the granting institution or awarding body and carry the seal and signature of the Registrar or other approved person. Other materials needed for applications include:

When to apply?

The State University of New York is home to a flexible admissions system, offering two intakes. SUNY welcomes students in both fall as well as spring intakes that begin in September and January, respectively.

Student Diversity & Preferred Profile

The institute has a 59% admission rate for first-year students and a 56% acceptance rate for transfer students. Although the school has a low level of selection criteria, candidates should be aware that the applicant pool is frequently very competitive. Only 2,568 of the 4,354 applications received by the institution for Fall 2020 were approved. Applications are approved based on merit, educational background, class standing, written essays, and prerequisite courses.

  • Norma Kamali: American fashion designer Norma Kamali. She is most renowned for her “sleeping bag” coat, parachuted silk clothing, and adaptable, multipurpose clothing. 

 Kamali received the American Fashion Critics Award in 1981, which was officially known as the       “Winnie” Coty Award. On the Fashion Walk of Fame, Kamali has a plaque.  She was given the CFDA Board of Directors Special Tribute Award in 2005, and Michael Kors honoured her with the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

  • Calvin Klein: American fashion designer Calvin Richard Klein founded Calvin Klein Inc. in 1968, becoming the company’s first CEO. He has also given his name to several watches, fragrances, and jewellery products in addition to apparel.

He became the first fashion designer to be honoured at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards ceremony for both excellent men’s and women’s wear design. He was listed among the best-dressed individuals internationally in 1983. He also earned a CFDA prize in 1981, 1983, and 1993. He won the Golden Plate Award in 1991 from the American Academy of Achievement. 

  • Micheal Kors: Michael David Kors is a fashion designer from the United States. Michael Kors is the chief creative officer of his company, which provides men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, watches, jewellery, footwear, and fragrance. From 1997 through 2003, Kors was the first women’s ready-to-wear designer for the French fashion label Celine.

He enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1977.
